An assembly on Black History Month with this year’s theme of voting. The resource gives a task where students are made to consider how it would feel to be treated differently because of your appearance or identity. Then there is an explanation of the context in which the civil rights movement was going on in and we look at the importance of the right to vote.
The second task is a true or false activity about the rights of African American people during this time, to help students understand the signifcance of the rights they fought for.
The third task is where students watch a clip from Martin Luther King’s ‘I have a dream speech’ and talk about what the term 'all men (and women) being born equal".
The forth task is a matchup activity where students are shown the photos of four people of African descent and are asked to name them and asked what achievements thry are known for. The next slides give a breakdown of these key people and explains why they are important.
The final task is a look into ‘I know why the caged bird sings’, students are played the video of people reading it and the meaning is explained.
This can be adapted to being a lesson, it has 17 slides in total and is fully editable if you wish to delet anything. I have included a task which I also used in my BLM lesson which I thought was a great tool for showcasing the civil rights movements in America. The only thing I havent included is the full speech of MLK and the poem because these are freely avible but I was unsure about putting them on here for copywright concerns.
